Four years ago my grandfather brought me some raspberry starts and gave me great instructions on how to plant them to start my own little raspberry patch. For four years under my care the plants have been growing, spreading, and taking over a corner of my garden and for four years I've had no berries. My grandfather's raspberry patch (started with the same starts) has yielded so many berries every year he sometimes gives them away.

A few weeks ago I was prepping my gardens for new bark and noticed that I actually had a few berries on my plants this year. I have not paid much attention to that little corner of my yard and I had determined my plants would probably never yield berries. I was excited that there were three of four berries good enough to be picked and eaten and looked forward to when the rest of the berries would ripen.

I fear my oldest schnauzer, Libby, found the berries around the same time I did and I recently realized she has been snacking on the plants. I watched her a few days ago as she slithered through the patch jerking her body because of the pain from the thorns. She then lifted herself on her hind legs and balanced as she ate berries from the top of the plants... the little stink!

The pictures are of the patch and a few berries Libby managed to miss. I plan on watching and caring more for this little piece of land next summer and hopefully I'll have berries enough to share.

My hydrangeas look really great this year too, but they are the strangest colors.
