My good friend Rebecca gave me a great gift for Christmas. She knew I had "learn to paint" on my 30 Things List so she bought me some supplies and an instruction book. I spent a day of my Holiday break reading the book and also doing a little online research about watercolor technique. I then decided to just dive in and see if I could do it.
I decided to do a painting based on a verse from Luke 23. It is the story of Christ's crucifixion. Two men were crucified on either side of Christ, one put his faith in Jesus and one didn't. The three trees represent each of the three men crucified that day. I decided to represent the men using trees because I feel there are similar connections to the life of trees and the spiritual lives of humans. The trees are also good representations because the crosses would have been made from the wood of trees and stood on Golgotha similarly to the way the trees stand on the three hills here. The middle one represents Christ, and I painted "IRNI" where the tree branches cross. Christ offers life. One of the men accepts life, represented by the tree on the right. The other man rejects Christ and is represented by the tree on the left. This is my first painting so I'm not very impressed with myself, but I enjoyed painting and will most likely continue with other paintings.

I used a salt technique for the sky and a saran wrap technique for the trees. I also used some masking techniques for some of the leaves and shapes.
Since I've done at least one painting I feel I can say I learned to paint, therefore I've checked that off of my 30 Things List.
